Solon: K-3 Pupils Must Focus Only on Reading, Math and GMRC

A lawmaker on Sunday suggested not to overload the kindergarten to Grade 3 pupils with many subjects so that they can focus on reading, mathematics and good manners and right conduct (GMRC).

K to 12 curriculum is definitely right in prescribing Mother Tongue-Based Multi-Lingual Education for K to Grade 3 learners. I would suggest; however; as part of the K-12 curriculum review not to introduce English learning area for Grade 1 learners in so far as learning-to-read focus is concerned. Some English alphabets like Cc, Ee, Ff, Oo, Qq, Vv, Xx and Zz cannot be found in many dialects spoken by the different ethnic groups of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Filipino alphabets are similarly formed to English letters. Thus, both L2 (Filipino) and L3 (English) should be taught reading and writing instructions inside the classroom of Grade 1 learners so that the Grade 1 school children would not be confused to the letter sound that they do not hear in their daily conversations at home.

Reading and writing Filipino lessons should start with Grade 2 learners; and reading and writing English lessons should begin also with Grade 2 pupils, but it should at the start of last quarter of the school year. The introduction of reading and writing English lessons should center on the different English vowel letters such as Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo and Uu because these vowel letters produce many variations compared to the sound of ethnic groups' Mother Tongue like Bahasa Sug, Tagalog, Sinama, Ybanag and other dialects spoken in provinces or regions.

After a year of every grade level, development over learner's reading comprehension shall be targeted by the teacher. For instance, Grade 1 students in Mother Tongue shall be expected with proficient reading comprehension level in Mother Tongue at the year-end of Grade 2 studies; Grade 2 pupils in Filipino will be anticipated having proficient reading comprehension level at the year-end of Grade 3 studies; and Grade 3 English students are expected to have proficient reading comprehension level at the year-end of Grade 4 studies.

Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao is more favorable than Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) in our time those elementary days. Developing learner as person is very a holistic development.

Mathematics needs to be taught in a non-traditional way.
