In line with the implementation of Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, the Department of Education (DepED) issues the policy on the Learning Action Cell (LAC) as a K to 12 Basic Education Program School-Based Continuing Professional Development Strategy for the Improvement of Teaching and Learning.
Through this policy, the DepED fully supports the continuing professional development of its teaching personnel based on the principle of lifelong learning and DepED's commitment to the development of teacher's potential aimed towards their success in the profession. This can be done through the School-Based LAC, which primarily functions as a professional learning community for teachers that will help them improve practice and learner achievement.
This policy will remain in force and effect unless sooner repealed, amended, or rescinded. DepED Order No. 35 s. 2016 states that all issuances inconsistent with this Order are rescinded.
To conduct LAC meeting, there are certain steps that need to be followed as suggested in the following manner:
- Before the meeting
- Sharing sessions
- Introduction of topics
- Activity
- Sharing what we will do
- After the meeting
Before the Meeting - Remind the SLAC
members to bring their Teacher’s Guide or any upcoming lessons to the meeting.
Tell them to prepare to share orally their experiences, bring student work or
learning materials developed.
Sharing Sessions - This lasts for 30 minutes. Share in pair,
groups, subject groups the experiences and reflections pertaining to new
materials, new activities, new approaches they have tried.
Introduction of Topics - Another 30 minutes can be utilized for this step. Introduce new topic.
Teacher can video capsules. Guide questions in the guidebook can be used to
stimulate discussions.
Activity - This is a professional activity-making materials/preparing for lessons/demonstration teaching. 50 minutes may be enough for this step. Look at the TGs and
select lessons or activities where they can apply what has been introduced or
discussed in the meeting. This can be done in pairs, small groups or
individually.
Sharing What We Will Do - This step needs only 10 minutes. SLAC members can
share what they are planning to do and together in small groups discuss and
help each other identify what they will collect in terms of evidence in the
outcome. At the next session, they will share experiences, collected
data/evidences and reflection on what they tried and how it worked.
After the Meeting - Confirm dates for
next SLAC meeting. The school head may confirm with some teachers schedule of
classroom observations.
*This is a 2-hour LAC session. The
time allotment for each part may be adjusted according to the agreed schedule
and duration of the conferences.
