Learning Insights from Closing Ceremony of SEA Games 2019

SEA (Southeast Asian) Games 2019 held in the Philippine Arena lasted for 12 days from November 30 to December 11, 2019. Philippines highlighted the closing ceremony with her top rank as 'Overall Champion'. Roger Casugay, Filipino surfer made the awarding ceremony astounding when he received a recognition of Fair Play Award for his humane heart to rescue his Indonesian surfing competitor, Arip Nurhidayat from the cruelty of the waves instead of winning the gold medal.

Athletic competition is one of the DepED thrusts conducted in schools, districts, provinces, regions and nation, the so-called Palarong Pambansa. I have never witnessed both opening and closing ceremonies of regional athletic meet and palarong pambansa, but it is definitely as live as the SEA Games based on those photos posted in social media.

In my experiences years ago, closing ceremonies of Indanan South District Meet (ISDM) and Sulu Provincial Athletic Association Meet (SPAAM) should replicate the awarding of SEA Games 2019. In ISDM closing ceremonies, some sports units are no longer as visible as they were in opening ceremonies of athletic event. Similarly, SPAAM showed it, too.

Are they already tired? Are they discouraged? Are they ashamed to face the winners?

I salute Sulu Schools Division Superintendent (SDS), Dr. Hji. Kiram K. Irilis in disallowing teachers and learners/students who are not coaches, chaperons and athletes to compete in the SPAAM 2019. Instead, SDS advised them to stay in their respective classes for teaching and learning processes. He even reduced the number of teachers' and students' presentations in the opening program of the SPAAM. It aimed to comply with the no-disruption-of-classes policy entrusted by DepED.

To be as live as SEA Games 2019 closing ceremony, SPAAM should be attended by all district teachers, personnel, education stakeholders, school board representatives and performers.
